Restaurant to Another World

When people think of cosmic dread, they think of giant tentacle monster ad existensial horror popularized by writers like H.P. Lovecraft but i will be honest, I never read his work but I got into cosmic dread while watching a cozy anime about food.

I have General Anxiety Disorder so I need so low stakes entertainment.

And some how Restaurant to Another World quietly introduced one of the most unsettling ideas in fiction, we are small and temporary beings in a large unforgiving universe.

So here is the premise. A regular ass door in modern day Japan opens its doors to a fantasy world once a week. Like an Iseakai but a whole business goes on a ride. So you have Dragons, Elves, Fayes , Lizard Folk walking through the door and reading the menu and on the surface its super chill but underneath the food and qiet friendships is something much bigger.

And lets talk about the Red Dragon. She seen way too much. She is ancient and watch civilzation rise and fall over and over . In her eyes, Kingdoms are temporary, Heroes are fleeting and war are like minor interruptions in eternity .

What i took from all that? Cosmic dread is not all teriffying . Its humbling. In the anime, the monsters are real, wars are inevitiable. The universe is indifferent but you can find comfort in the small things. Like remebering for favorite dish and coming to a place where you are welcome to share a meal. and sometimes finding a small light in the darkness is all you need to move forward.
